Synopsis
The Masterpiece Returns!

In 1988, the landmark Anime film Akira, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. By today's standards, Akira remains a landmark achievement in cel animation and retains the explosive impact of its highly detailed animation and its intensely violent saga of power and corruption. Pioneer Entertainment proudly presents this classic film, completely restored and digitally re-mastered.

Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda's motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. The military captures Tetsuo and conducts experiments on him that unleash his latent psychic ability, but when these new powers rage out of control, Tetsuo lashes out at the world that has oppressed him!

WTF? - 4.5 out of 5  (1/8/2002)
WTF have they done??? I couldnt wait to get my hands on this but its all oh so wrong!! If you're a fan of the original, you'll be very disappointed...i was dismayed to find that they'd changed a lot of the original script....i thought i was loosing the plot ( while watching the subtitles ) only to find the english dialogue was the same.... It might be an all singing, all dancing 5.1 mix but you'd be better trying to get a limited ed. Japanese version from the people who know best!   more >>

Akira is by far the best Anime movie I've seen - 5 out of 5  (12/31/2001)
I heard about Akira coming to the US on tape along time ago on tape and the commercial was really tight. I kinda forgot about it until a couple of months ago so I figured it was worth it and bought the special edition DVD. The movie is a work of art, hands down. The animation is smooth and is extremely detailed (look at Neo-Tokyo in the backround) The sound was transferred great onto the DVD and has really good voice actors. Now the sound is something else, all of the sounds of Neo-Tokyo mix tog   more >>

The original vhs is still better - 2.5 out of 5  (12/24/2001)
I expect more from a dvd. I own around 200 and have Akira before pioneer got there greedy hands on it and messed up the masterpiece for bigger profit. I seen better Troma movies. Some people like the new Akira but real people that have been into it from the late 80's like me hated this version.   more >>
